Apollo of Chatsworth - Jesmonite Replica - Ancient Greek Mythology
A resin-based replica of the Chatsworth Head of Apollo.
This remarkable jesmonite replica, meticulously handcrafted in the UK, is modelled after an original bronze sculpture once owned by the Duke of Devonshire. The original piece was part of the esteemed collection at Chatsworth House and is now proudly housed in the British Museum.
The replica takes inspiration from a statue dating back to the 5th century BCE, which was slightly larger than life-size. The head, crafted in the early Classical Greek style, was unearthed by peasants in Tamassos, Cyprus. This site later revealed a sanctuary dedicated to Apollo, discovered through subsequent excavations. The combination of the statue's significant size and the head's long curly locks suggest that the statue depicted Apollo himself. Fortunately, while the statue's body was destroyed and sold for scrap metal, the head was preserved, allowing its legacy to endure.
Apollo, a prominent figure in ancient Greek mythology, was the son of Zeus and Leto and the twin brother of Artemis. He was revered as the god of music, poetry, and the sun. Delphi, the primary center for his worship, became renowned for its oracle, which Apollo was believed to protect. According to myth, Apollo occasionally bestowed the gift of divination upon others, further enhancing his association with prophecy.
The jesmonite replica not only captures the essence of the original sculpture but also serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient Greek art and mythology. Each detail, from the intricately moulded curls to the majestic presence of the head, reflects the skill and dedication of the artisans who created this piece. This replica offers a tangible connection to the past, allowing admirers to appreciate the artistry and cultural significance of a civilization that continues to inspire awe and admiration.
A magnificent ornament for any lover of ancient Greek art.
