Italian Sculpture: Benedetto da Maiano - Virgin and Child Plaque
A mother's love is expressively shown in this replica of a marble relief, now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, of the Virgin and Child, by Benedetto da Maiano (1442–1497), made about 1490, near the time when the young Michelangelo came under his influence. In it, the Christ Child displays his humanity as he playfully tugs at his mother's shawl while she contemplates him indulgently. A fine art gift of Italian Renaissance statuary.
Hand patinated, cast stone with a hook for hanging. 12.5'' Height x 9.625'' Width x 2'' Depth.
