French Sculpture: Rodin - Adam
A gift of art, profound as it is beautiful, this superb example of French statuary depicts Adam. The statue, together with one of Eve, was intended to flank the massive sculpture The Gates of Hell also by Auguste Rodin. Adam appeared to have been a re-naming of Rodin’s sculpture The Creation of Man inspired by Michelangelo’s famous fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel: The Creation of Adam. Michelangelo’s influence on Rodin is evident. Adam’s right arm takes the pose of the Michelangelo work in the Vatican. His left arm resembles the dead Jesus’ left arm in another Michelangelo work, the Pietà in the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore.
