French Sculpture: Rodin - The Thinker Crystal

Regular price $ 65.00 $ 0.00
This is a gift of art that depicts the Italian poet Dante Alighieri contemplating his classic opus The Divine Comedy. The figure is taken from the monumental relief sculpture commissioned by the French government known as The Gates of Hell. This is a clear beveled crystal rendering of The Thinker that was exhibited, independently of The Gates of Hell, in 1889, some nine years after The Gates, which were meant to adorn the portal of a new museum, were commissioned. The Thinker was not part of the original sculptural relief The Gates of Hell but was conceived with the intention that he should sit atop that huge portal.
